With December fast approaching, take a moment to forget about the present buying and start compiling that all-important Christmas playlist – yes, everyone has one.

From holiday heartaches to cheesy classics, there have been hundreds of songs released over the years, all in hope of becoming the nation’s favourite.

But which ones have made the cut? Check out our list below to see our top fifteen festive tracks that we’ve got on repeat this holiday.

1. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey

Frolicking in the snow in a cute Claus outfit, Mariah Carey has got us feeling all fuzzy and in love this Christmas.

A classic Christmas hit, it’s almost impossible to comprehend how this song came runner up to East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’ when it was released in 1994. With an opening that’s instantly recognisable, it’s not surprising that this song made the top of our list.

2. Fairytale Of New York – The Pogues ft. Kirsty Maccoll

Created by Irish folk-rockers, this smash hit has been a festive favourite since its release in 1987. With a Big Apple narrative that illustrates hope, despair, heartbreak and love, this jolly ol’ number really goes through it all.

3. Last Christmas – Wham

A ballad of doomed romance, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley make holiday heartache a little more bearable with this 80’s hit. Set in a wintry wonderland dream, you’ll be sure to have serious Christmas jumper envy after watching the video.

4. Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) – The Darkness

Owing to Justin Hawkins and the other members of the Darkness, this rocking take on Christmas really does have it all. Sleigh bells, singing children, flared trousers and swanky guitar solos – what’s not to love?

5. Sleigh Ride – The Ronettes

With a lot of ‘dingaling aling a ding dong ding’ and three sweet soulful voices, this lovely little number from 1963 is sure to sure to get you riding on into the Christmas spirit.

6. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town – Jackson 5

Our favourite five pop singers come together with plenty of jazz hands to recreate this classic hit. If you’re not up and bouncing along within the first minute, then you need to vamp the volume up!

7. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard

Pure 70’s pop. This cheesy classic is the perfect mix of tongue and cheek. Transporting you into a wonderful and weird world of twinkling bells and children’s choirs, the entire music video is a brilliant and yet bonkers setting for Roy Wood and his glittery eyes.

8. Santa Baby – Kylie Minogue

With a list that is longer than our arms, Kylie has managed to compile all of our Christmas wishes into a three-and-a-half minute song. All wrapped up with her sweet and sultry pop voice, we’ll be sending this one off to Santa in time for Christmas.

9. Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid (1984)

When Bob Geldof and Midge Ure reacted to the Ethiopian famine, they called upon stars like Phil Collins, Bono and Sting to create a Christmas cracker that would raise millions for charity. A huge hit, it stayed at the top spot for five weeks, making it the biggest UK chart success of the decade.

10. Step Into Christmas – Elton John

With Elton’s vocals and fantastic piano playing, it’s not hard to see why this number has made it onto the list. Just stick it on in your car and you’ll soon be bobbing along with a funky pair of shades.

11. One More Sleep – Leona Lewis

The one song you’ll have playing all-day long on Christmas Eve, this X Factor star has got all our pre-Christmas excitement wrapped up into one tune. Known for her incredible vocal ability, you’ll be smashing out those high notes after a few glasses of bubbly.

12. 8 Days Of Christmas – Destiny’s Child

For those who want something a little more contemporary, check out the Destiny’s Child Christmas album. Injecting some sass into the festive season, Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle transform a classic Christmas hit into a bumping R&B Christmas carol.

Perfect for building the Christmas excitement, this little number is one of those that you’ll want blasting out as you’re decorating the Christmas tree. With his irresistible Motown charm, Stevie Wonder adds some smooth swing vibes to Christmas with this song – especially with the cracking harmonica solo.
